Junior tournaments dominated the local tennis scene. Most of the championships were recognised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), giving players a chance to earn global ranking points on home courts. Local tennis wrote a new chapter in 2011 as Kenya hosted all the three legs of ITF/CAT Junior Circuit in February, 2011. Usually, three rounds are spread between Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
The participation of Kenyans in the events marked an improved performance, with most of them going beyond the first round. The only notable seniors’ event was Real Insurance Kenya Open Championships won by Ugandan Duncan Mugabe in the men’s singles with Azisa Butoyi of Burundi lifting the women’s trophy.
The stake in this event, the biggest in the KLTA calender, is Kshs800,000 ($9,412) prize money.
